From a documentary about fast fashion to minimalism fashion. The Green Wardrobe, founded in 2018 by Marloes Warnaar. Designer, online marketer and above all a lover of adventure, nature and fashion. Outdoor enthusiast in the field of cycling, cycling, mountain biking, gravel, racing, but also winter sports, mountains and minimalism. Since the start of 2018, it has grown from a small idea on the couch to a leading brand in the field of organic casual fashion.

About myself I was an account manager. Now I am myself. Who would have thought that I could be found on Amerongen from an overflowing wardrobe and lover of the city to cruising through the mud on a mountain bike? Not me and certainly not my parents. Sometimes life goes differently than you expected and I especially noticed that I find the most peace in, yes, nature. The beautiful cols on the racing bike, the varying mountain bike rides and the walks that no longer took place on the meent in Rotterdam this time, have done me a lot of good. For me this has become a resting point and also a great source of inspiration for the designs in this sustainable webshop. A bit infected with the cycling virus, but don't mistake myself in a long walk that gives my calves more muscle pain than a day out in heels.

Inspiration 2018

My living room completely covered with all my clothes. I too have read Marie Kondo's book "tidied up" and one rainy day I applied the assignment. What a misery, I couldn't believe that I had collected so much clothing in recent years and certainly did not think about the money that was wasted on unworn pieces of clothing, how many nice things could I have done with this?! Minimalism was nowhere to be found. Documentaries such as The true cost & minimalism also made me think extra about the bizarre situations and circumstances within the clothing industry. The clothing industry has a lot of child labor and the textile industry also accounts for a large share of the polluted industry. Nowadays, many consumers find it very normal to pay for clothing items for a few euros, but this comes at the expense of good working conditions and employees (Rana Plaza). Fashion is great fun, but let's be honest, isn't there too much in all our wardrobes? And should we not invest in a sustainable item? Or at least an item that you will wear regularly? Inspired and touched, I decided to contribute to the fair fashion industry. Fast fashion should simply become fair fashion. Be aware what you wear. Organic & Minimalism Minimalism is a lifestyle. It is a process that you go through when you are ready for change or when you start realizing what you really want in life. I really don't care whether you have 1-2 or 5 jeans, as long as you are genuinely happy with them and wear them, it's a nice addition. As soon as you start buying products because you think it fills your life, I think you should invest more time and energy in nice friendships, relationships, adventures or especially in yourself. You should use a product and wear it with pleasure. Once you appreciate what you have in your life, you stop looking at what you don't have. Minimalism - an appreciation of life.

After a considerable search with various manufacturers, this resulted in a company that designs clothing from organic cotton, recycled polyester and also linen. After I thoroughly read myself in the accompanying reports (fairwear foundation) I decided to start the collaboration. I try to keep the designs minimalist, stylish and calm. I believe that timeless is also stylish, this does not mean that sustainable clothing should be boring. Shops and marketing make me personally very restless, nature on the other hand does not (barring exceptions) that is why the designs are a combination of nature elements. Sustainable clothing rich in beautiful seasonal colors and comfortable models. That's what minimalism fashion stands for.

Mission and vision: be aware of what you wear. We care about people and nature. The label is produced from organic cotton and recycled polyester, which means that the cotton plantation is grown without chemicals. Recycled rainwater is also used, biodiversity and the material is suitable for sensitive skin. The farmers and factory workers are supported by the fairwear organization (www.fairwear.org). They work in better conditions and problems are solved rather than avoided. The children are cared for by a childcare facility. The process ensures 50% less CO2 emissions, which is also controlled by the fairwear organization. In short: striving for fair fashion through sustainable materials combined with sleek and sturdy designs offer a lot of fun in the fair fashion industry. Love people, use things. The opposite never works.

Why choose clothing made from organic cotton?

Organic cotton is a popular fabric. Cotton itself has been used for clothing for years, cotton feels comfortable, is breathable and dries quickly. That is why so much clothing is made of cotton. But what exactly is organic cotton? And why is it important to choose clothing made of organic cotton? We like to tell you that.

What is Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton is grown without toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Instead, biological methods are used. For example, other insects are used to combat harmful insect populations. In addition, the soil is not exhausted, because rotational cultivation is done so that the soil retains the important nutrients. Less water is also used in the production of organic cotton. But there are even more differences between organic cotton and conventional cotton. For example, the seeds that are used for organic cotton are natural GMO-free seeds, for many conventional cotton GMO seeds are used. In addition, people wait for the moment that the cotton plants lose their leaves on their own. With "normal" cotton, the plant is often killed with poison to speed up the process. Read more about organic cotton production at aboutorganiccotton.org Because no unnatural fertilizers are used, organic cotton grows more slowly. That's why you pay more for organic cotton, just like you do for organic strawberries, for example. 😉

Why is it important to choose organic cotton?

It is important to choose organic cotton because the negative environmental consequences of normal cotton production are very large. About 25 percent of the pesticides used worldwide are used on cotton. Some of these chemicals are labeled as the most toxic in the world. They cause health problems such as birth defects, reproductive disorders and weaker immune systems. In many countries, cotton is still picked by hand. You can imagine that these toxic pesticides can therefore easily affect the health of the employees on the plantation. The pesticides also end up in the (ground) water and the chemicals deplete the soil, so that more and more unnatural fertilizers are needed. The chemical pesticides normally used in cotton production don't just kill the insects that eat the plants, which already has a detrimental effect on the entire ecosystem, because insects are at the very bottom of the food pyramid. But also other insects, including the all-important bees. Bees are indispensable for the pollination of cotton plants but also all other crops that grow. Read more at pbs.org. But not only insects are killed by these pesticides. Birds also die in large numbers from the heavy pesticides.

What is GOTS?

GOTS is an international certification of organic cotton that was established in 2002. The label guarantees that the production of the cotton is done in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. The label originated as a collaboration of major players within organic cotton: Organic Trade Association, Japan Organic Coton Association, International Association of Natural Textile Industry and Soil Association (UK), JOCA (Japan), IVN Naturtextil (Germany) and Soil Association ( United Kingdom). The checks are carried out by independent control bodies. Read more at global-standard.org.

How do you wash your organic cotton clothes?

Have you purchased an organic cotton garment? Doing well! You can wash organic cotton the same as conventional cotton. Always look at the label inside the garment for exact instructions. But in general it is best to wash cotton at 30 degrees. Washing at a low temperature is also good for the environment!

Fast fashion? No thanks!

Fair fashion, please! We love timeless designs and quality fashion. Garments that last a long time, but above all remain beautiful for a long time. How are we going to achieve this with sustainable materials?

Suppliers

We can hear you thinking as long as it isn't made in Bangladesh! We are transparent about this and we work with a supplier from Bangladesh (Asia) and in Portugal. There are currently developments with a manufacturer from the Netherlands who recycle old yarn into a new product. Why Bangladesh? Remember the disaster at Rana Plaza? The ten-storey building in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, collapsed. More than 1,100 workers were killed and thousands were injured. This arose because of the poor maintenance of buildings and the exploitation of the cheap purchasing costs of clothing. (Especially the bigger brands) From this disaster the Bangladesh agreement was born. An agreement in which 200 clothing brands had to provide safer working conditions for textile workers. A lot of research and contact moments have gone into finding the right factory in Bangladesh, the reason why we do not want to exclude this manufacturer is for the following reasons:

∙ First of all: the employees are of very good quality in the textile work.
∙ Second, the women who do not work in the clothing industry often end up in the sex industry involuntarily.
∙ Third: the contact and contract with the fair wear foundation made us decide to support the industry in Bangladesh. The customer is held responsible for the circumstances, our purchasing costs are increased as the manufacturer wants to offer maintenance or more salary.

Of course we prefer to work more European and National. We are working hard on this, but unfortunately we speak from experience that not everything "made in Portugal" is actually produced in Portugal. It is a difficult world to trust 100% on what it says. Our confidence in the fairwear foundation is high and very strict and that is why we dare to be honest about this. The quality is simply excellent and the colors are unique and beautiful! Love for the profession in which many developments are still possible. From 2023, fashion chains will be responsible for the collection and recycling of discarded clothing.

The future

The future is uncertain and certainly unknown, but do something with your talent! We can learn from the past. The future lies in recycling, but also in organic cotton. Be kind to the world and yourself. Like organic food, cotton plantations need time and space to grow. The longer we last with our product.
